can it be added later? Would that be costly? Are there such things as portable fireplaces that get rid of smoke fumes without being hooked up?

There are all types of fireplaces that fit all kinds of needs. Several that don't need a chimney. I would suggest going to a fireplace/grill store, and ask them what your options are.
